Who We Are

We Believe Authenticity Can Transform Lives

Young children stand in a classroom smiling and dancing together, each striking their own playful pose as books and classroom supplies fill the background.

Our Story

The Children’s Arts Guild is a nonprofit organization dedicated to championing the authentic development of children. Since 2011, our work has been animated by the words of Frederick Douglass who said: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken [people.]” We believe that when adults lead with authenticity, children thrive.

Our work addresses a critical challenge: A crisis in youth mental health. Research shows that self-alienation — when children disconnect from their authentic selves to conform to societal expectations — drives anxiety, depression, substance use, and behavioral issues.

We create environments where young people can explore and express their innermost selves — a vital and often overlooked pathway to thriving. A focus on authenticity empowers children and the adults who care for them to flourish in a complex and ever-changing world.

Our Purpose

A teacher sits at the front of a classroom reading a picture book aloud to a group of young children seated on the floor, surrounded by colorful student artwork displayed on the walls.

The Guild pioneered the exploration of authenticity in children’s development and education. With support from The NoVo Foundation, we convened the first-of-its-kind conference on children and authenticity at Teachers College, Columbia University in 2016, followed by two conferences exploring the personal, social, and economic utility of authenticity. This work evolved into evidence-based programs that have trained thousands of educators across the United States and partnered with dozens of schools in the New York area.
